Decoding Shostakovich - BSO
SHOSTAKOVICH From Jewish Folk Poetry
“The distinguishing feature of Jewish music is the ability to build a jolly melody on sad intonations," Shostakovich told a friend. "Why does a man strike up a jolly song? Because he feels sad at heart.” This sort of black humor--“laughter through tears”--struck a deep chord in Shostakovich. Antisemitism and the difficult historical experience of the Jewish people in Tsarist Russia, the USSR and elsewhere profoundly disturbed him, especially since many of his close friends and colleagues were Jewish and he saw first-hand the injustices and humiliation they suffered at the hands of Stalin and Hitler. Shostakovich incorporated Jewish themes into numerous works: the Second Piano Trio (1944), the First Violin Concerto (1947), From Jewish Folk Poetry (1948) the Fourth String Quartet (1949), and the “Babi yar” Symphony No.13 (1962). Prof. Harlow Robinson will discuss these works and other issues of Shostakovich's relationship to Jewish themes.

the Compassionate Music Educator - Part 1
Too many musicians leave music school burned out, unempowered and disconnected from their love of music. As educators, we have the power and the responsibility to break this cycle. This free masterclass series is designed to help music educators cultivate safer, more inclusive learning environments by examining their role in preventing harm, encouraging student self-advocacy, and fostering artistic freedom.
Who is this Masterclass for?
🎵 Music educators who want to create more compassionate, student-centered learning spaces
🎵 Teachers who recognize the need for change in music education and want actionable strategies
🎵 Anyone committed to harm reduction, inclusivity, and trauma-informed teaching practices
Why we do this work:
Because music education should nurture students, not break them. Too many musicians carry trauma from their training—perfectionism, self-doubt, burnout—into their careers and personal lives. By addressing the ways music education can unintentionally cause harm, we can help students self-advocate, set boundaries, and develop a healthier relationship with music for the long term.
Masterclass Topics:
July 12: Cultivating a Safe and Supportive Learning Environment
Creating a space where students feel safe to take artistic risks
Challenging internalized and externalized ableism and fatphobia
Combating perfectionism and comparison in the classroom
Using morally neutral language to foster growth
July 19: The Role of Ego in Teaching: From Authority to Ally
Recognizing and releasing ego to better serve students
Identifying how ego might unintentionally impact our teaching methods
Avoiding projection: letting students define their own artistic paths
Encouraging students to set boundaries and self-advocate
July 26: Compassionate Communication & Repairing Harm
Giving feedback in a way that empowers, not discourages
Repairing harm when we unintentionally hurt a student’s feelings
Understanding how trauma might impact a student’s performance
Setting and maintaining healthy boundaries with students

Die Tote Stadt - Korngold
Presented in collaboration with Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) at Symphony Hall, Erich Korngold’s Die tote Stadt (“The Dead City”) is an incredibly tender work, embodying the twilight of the Romantic era. Korngold, a remarkable prodigy who later became one of Hollywood’s most important composers, began the opera when he was only 19 and completed it at age 23. It opened simultaneously in December 1920 in Cologne and Hamburg and became one of the biggest operatic successes of the era. The opera’s theme of struggling with the memory of a lost loved one undoubtedly resonated with audiences still traumatized by the recent catastrophe of World War I.

Is this America? - White Snake Projects
With summer just around the corner, White Snake Projects is celebrating the longer days and sunlight with our new season. How wonderful! How exciting!
This year, our theme of “voting as freedom”, in anticipation of the upcoming elections, is anchored by our season opener, “Is This America?,” a world premiere opera exploring the life and legacy of the great Mississippi voting rights activist, Fannie Lou Hamer. Recognizing that the vote is the most powerful weapon ordinary citizens have to control their destiny, Ms. Hamer worked tirelessly, against almost insurmountable odds, to bring her people to the polling booth. Many of the obstacles to voting that Ms. Hamer faced in the ’60s are prevalent today as lawmakers seek to make the exercise of the franchise hard for many of our fellow citizens.
The composer is 85 year old Mary D. Watkins, who is a pioneer for all black woman opera composers.
