Ep. 17/ The origins of music

sex, Magic & Ecstatic Trance

Music hasn't always been used as a source of entertainment. Research shows us that our ancient ancestors used music for sex, magic, and violence. Join me as I unpack the first 3 chapters of Music: A Subversive History by Ted Gioia, in which I discuss music as a source of power, the research and theories behind the origins of music, and the elitism and misinformation of modern music academia.

There is so much more to music history than what conservatories have fed to classical musicians like me. This book opened my eyes in a lot of ways and I think it is a great step in the right direction to unlearn the harmful conditioning that the Western Classical Music Tradition so desperately holds on to.

“the history books downplay essential elements of music that are considered disreputable—for example, its deep connection to sexuality, magic, trance, healing, social control, political unrest, and even violence.”  -  Ted gioia
